Ken Penders

An American comic book writer and artist best known for his work on Archie Comics' Sonic the Hedgehog series. Joining the title in late 1993, Penders served as its primary creative force for over a decade, authoring and illustrating stories that significantly expanded the series' mythology - most notably through the introduction of the Knuckles lore, the Dark Legion, and the echidna civilization's history - before departing in 2006. Prior to and alongside his Sonic tenure, he produced work for virtually every major American comics publisher, with credits including Star Trek: The Next Generation and Savage Sword of Conan for DC Comics, as well as titles for Marvel, Image, Disney, and others. Following his departure from Archie, Penders became widely known in the comics industry for a series of legal disputes over the ownership of characters and stories he created during his time on the title. In Archie v. Penders, Archie Comics sued Penders after he began filing copyright claims over characters and stories he created for the series; the case was dismissed in 2013, with a subsequent settlement resulting in Penders retaining his characters, which abruptly disappeared from the comic thereafter. Concurrently, Penders filed his own suit against Sega of America and Electronic Arts in Penders v. Sega, asserting that the two companies had based the Nocturnus Clan on his Dark Legion without authorization; that case was dismissed in 2012. Penders has since pursued independent publication of his Sonic-era work through his own imprint, Floating Island Productions, while continuing development of an original media project, The Lara-Su Chronicles, built around characters originating from his Sonic stories.
